A brief preface: the protagonist of Saimin Yuugi is Yanagi, as short chubby class-clown type high school boy. He likes to practice tricks and perform them to make the people around him smile. He specializes in coin magic, but has been running dry on related martial recently, so he decides to start practicing hypnosis to change up his act.

The following are the three routes of Yuugi, at least as accurately as I remember them:

Maina, the honors student: Yanagi convinces Maina to let him practice hypnosis on her for an upcoming stage performance on two conditions: a) Maina will not actually participate in the stage performance, he'll have to find another volunteer for that, and b) Yanagi will not touch Maina or do anything she wouldn't be okay with. He deepens her hypnosis over several days with innocuous things like time-stopping and hallucinations. He questions Maina and confirms that her memories of events while under are pretty foggy, so escalates things and starts having her take off her clothes and masturbate and such. He uses sexual pleasure to further deepen her hypnosis until he is able to control her memories and breaks condition (b) of their agreement, but Maina doesn't find out. After repeated sexual contact, Yanagi stages a special session where he wakes Maina up and restores her memories of all their previous sessions. Understandably, Maina is quite angry at him. But Yanagi expected this, and does body-control hypnosis to prevent her from moving or escaping and sensation-control to drown her in pleasure and happiness. He takes advantage of her addled mind to rewrite her memories, and makes her believe that he and Maina were childhood friends who were separated for a while due to family circumstances, but upon being reunited in high school reignited their friendship, which led to a physical and romantic relationship. This culminates in Maina becoming his "willing" assistant and girlfriend. Notably, this route is canon in the sequel, Enbu.

Keika tells them the truth; Yanagi's fun to hang out with and they get along well, but she doesn't see him as a romantically at all, and it a bit insulted that her friends would seriously entertain the idea. She expounds that Yanagi doesn't really register as a boy to her, owing to his cute appearance, and clownish attitude. She is also quite short and has something of a complex about it. Perhaps to compensate for that, her type is tall and masculine. Naturally, Yanagi overhears this and is heartbroken. I think the cat incident and other escalation was a response to this, but my memory is foggy. Eventually he pulls the same remember everything->terror->pleasure->brainwashing combo. Keika is particularly upset about the cat thing. This time Yanagi alters Keika's memories and preferences such that she believes she fell in love with him at first sight when meeting in high school and has been too shy to admit it. After this they become a couple and Yanagi becomes a member of Keika's friend group.

in my experience none of the major erotica story sites have any good tagging system and sorting system. it's wading through hundreds if not thousands of meh to actually find a story you like and even more of a bummer when you find out it's either too old and not updated or abandoned.

The subconscious is just a name for all the the myriad things your brain does without you being aware of it, such as image recognition, muscle memory and emotional regulation. Obviously you can become aware of these things if you direct your attention towards them, at which point you could call them conscious activities.

That being said, I've seen no good evidence that "Listening and language comprehension" can ever be done without directing some level of attention. Sure, and the purpose of the induction is to place you in a state of hyperfocus on their voice, while also tuning out other stimuli (Such as proprioception, aka the awareness of your own body), which increases your suggestibility.

It's possible to do some abusive stuff with hypnosis, like take advantage of a person's increased suggestibility to manipulate/implant memories (Note that this can also be done without hypnosis, people misremember things all the time). But even this requires an active process of imagining the false memories, which the person would be aware of. My understanding is most forms of memory implantation are done under the guise of "Past life regression" or "Uncovering blocked memories" or some similar justification. You couldn't implant a memory and leave no trace that the person was ever hypnotized.

You can actually very easily implant false memories in someone without their being hypnotized. It's as easy as saying "Remember when we did X?" and reinforcing it to the person periodically. It's not just that you'll convince them that they've forgotten, they'll develop a memory of the event as if it had really happened.
This occurs accidentally all the time, if you tell a story about something that happened to you frequently enough other people can start to remember it as if they'd been there.
It's all a side effect of the fact that we visualize the things happening that people are talking about, combined with the fact that memories are reconstructed rather than stored in our brain like a video that can be precisely replayed. The brain is saving the visualization the same way it does information about real events, then reconstructing it the same way as a legitimate memory.

That's true to an extent, but you can also slow boil the frog to get people to go along with things that they ordinarily wouldn't. It's simply a matter of progressively moving their goalposts by starting with something they completely agree with, then connecting that in a chain to the thing they'd usually object to, bridging the ideas so that accepting the first thing means they also naturally must agree to the last. Are we talking about "Hypnosis, the trope and fetish" or "Hypnosis, the real"? Because while both exist, they're wildly different from each other, similar to how the fictional portrayal of amnesia is completely unlike the real condition.

In fiction, hypnosis is whatever you want it to be. Some stories use it is instant brainwashing, some use it like a form of directable sleepwalking (person performs actions with no memory of them, can be easily "snapped out of it") and some implement rules like "You have to "want" to do whatever you're commanded to do", with often clever ways of skirting around those rules.

In reality, hypnosis is the act of hyperfocusing on a particular thing, which isn't really distinct from everyday life. You could easily argue that driving is an everyday form of hypnosis, likewise with being "in the zone" in a game or sport.

When used as therapy, it's shown reasonable effectiveness for specific purposes, like reducing the symptoms of irritable bowel disease, though it's not obviously superior to alternative forms of therapy.

The basic rule of thumb I use for hypnosis is "Anything you can do with hypnosis, you could do by just talking to someone". This includes a surprising number of possibilities though, such as "Hands free orgasms" (Premature ejaculation is a common response to excessive arousal) and potentially "Hallucinations" (Ordinary people can hallucinate in certain circumstances, such as around the time they're going to sleep, or when under significant stress).

This is usually accomplished with some macguffin, like a drug or special sequence of lights which induces a state of "super hypnosis". Another idea might be to establish a very close bond between the subjects, like "best friends" or "lovers", and use their trust as the macguffin.

From that point, if you want to avoid making it too easy, you just implement a sequence of logically dubious but plausible steps. The story "limits" on MCStories does a decent job of this, though it doesn't justify the strength of the hypnosis.

that makes a lot of sense in context of the bad route. I thought the treatment Mashiho got there was completely unwarranted and she was just being mischievous. If the original had them actually not get along then there was a good reason for it. I'm not sure why change that, as it makes less sense now, unless the point was to make MC look like an autistic sperg who totally misinterprets clues.

This I disagree with, I felt it was the absolute selling point. Mashiho starts with the playful catgirl personality from the get go and hypnosis just takes it to the next step. It's been a while, but iirc the non-cat stuff was just basic inductions and suggestions that gradually extended into petplay and catgirl stuff.

I must correct myself again; I hadn't actually finished any of the original routes when I wrote that. She still likes him from the get-go, she's just way more guarded about it, going as far as to explicitly tell Saru that she's not interested in him, and that he shouldn't expect a girl to just conveniently fall for him. In the bad route she also resists admitting to liking him while under, which is what causes Saru to start taking revenge out of jealousy. This misunderstanding is still pretty dumb though.
Also I may have overstated the degree to which M.C. (original) focuses on the cat stuff. The first half-ish of the bad route is focused on it, but then it suddenly drops it before any real development.
Original's good route seems to have no petplay at all, but I'm still reading it so maybe it'll crop up.
The remake's good route has a few petplay scenes, but it's definitely not a focus.
I haven't reread the remake's bad route yet so I can't comment on it much, though I do generally remember the ending suggesting the route involves more training than any of the others.

You wish they were alphabets. Two are syllabaries which mirror each other, kind of like upper and lowercase letters, which each have about 50 shapes are and are trivial to learn.
The third is all the kanji you might encounter, which is generally considered to be about 50,000 characters.
But you don't really learn kanji like you would an alphabet or syllabary all at once. It's more like learning vocabulary.

To keep this post from being completely off-topic: the plot thickens. This is from the remake's bad route. Mashiho really didn't like Saru, at least in this route. But if you pick the choice to get on the good route, she immediately confesses that she does like him. Perhaps her original feelings are dependent on the route? I don't think I've encountered a VN that changes canon based on the route before.
